Vicar's Update

Tuesday 1st March

Paul writing to the Philippians (4:6-7) says  ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.'

Today is the first day of the meteorological spring and as the days lengthen and Covid restrictions pass there is more hope and freedom for us all.   In contrast, I know that we have all been shocked and appalled by the events in Ukraine and are perhaps wondering what we can do to help.   Tonight is our monthly Church Prayer Meeting at 8pm in Church which will be mostly devoted to praying for the Ukraine.  Will you join us?

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and the Pope, Archbishops and other Christian leaders have urged all Christians to use it as a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Ukraine.  We will have an in-person Communion Service in Church at 10am during which there will be an opportunity to be marked with ash on your forehead as a sign of repentance.  On Ash Wednesday evening (and every Wednesday during Lent) we will hold Stations of the Cross at 8pm on Zoom – let me know if you would like the joining details.

Last Sunday we completed our series on looking at the Big Themes of the Bible:  Home and Hope. Ian Jamieson helped us to think about God’s final plan for peace and security in the new heaven and the new earth.  You can catch up here.

Next Sunday we start a new sermon series for Lent looking at the Christian Creed as week by week we unpack the things that we say we believe every time we affirm our faith.

As more people have now returned to in person worship, we have decided to stop livestreaming our monthly All Age Service from the end of March.  This will give us more freedom and flexibility and enable us to involve our children and young people more.   As we have additional All Age services in Lent, please note that the following will not be livestreamed - Mothering Sunday 27th March, Palm Sunday 10th April and first Sundays from 1st May onwards.  All other 10.30am services will be livestreamed as usual.

Thank you to those who have indicated that they wish to be baptised and/or confirmed.  We will be starting preparation sessions soon so if you are still to let us know please speak to (or simply email) Caroline or myself by Friday. If you have been baptised but would like to reaffirm your baptism vows by total immersion, please let us know as soon as possible.

I look forward to seeing you soon - have a good week.
