Giving

‘Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us!' 1 Chronicles 29:14b

We have been blessed by God in so many ways.  We are seeing people coming to faith and joining St Stephen's.  We serve our community and our outreach work has grown significantly.  But the Kingdom of God doesn’t stand still: we believe that God has more in store for us and indeed wants us to reach out to the many thousands of people who live in our Parish who do not yet have a relationship with Jesus Christ.  We can't do this without income donated by ordinary members of St Stephen's.

Our giving through the Church is an expression of our love for Him. The Bible teaches that everything we have belongs to God and is given by Him, in trust, for Him. Our giving back to God demonstrates our recognition of that fact and many of us have experienced that, as we give to Him, so he meets our needs.  The Bible provides us with some guidelines.
  • In 1 Corinthians 16 we read that our giving should be proportionate to our income and should be given first rather than from what we have left over. This allows us all to participate in God’s work whether we are rich or poor in the world’s eyes.
  • The concept of a ‘tithe’ whereby 10% of income is given to God is widely accepted throughout Scripture. Tithing to God through the local church enables us all to be effective in our worship, work and witness.  St Stephen’s follows this principle by giving away 10% of all that we receive.  If every member of St Stephen’s tithed their individual giving, our church finances, and the opportunities this would bring, would be transformed.
